Volunteer Instructors

Hunter Education Volunteer Instructor

Becoming a hunter education volunteer instructor is a multi-step process:

  • Send a letter of interest or intent to:
    • North Dakota Game and Fish Department
      Attn: Hunter Education
      100 N. Bismarck Expressway, Bismarck, ND 58501-5095
    • or email
    • This letter should include your name and mailing address.
  • A volunteer instructor agreement card will then be mailed to you. Complete the information on the card and return it to the address above.
  • After receiving your completed instructor agreement card, Game and Fish enforcement staff will conduct a background check.
  • If the background check is approved you will receive:
    • An instructor manual.
    • Instructions for completing an online instructor course.
    • A W-9 to be filled out to receive the $13 reimbursement associated with taking the online course.
    • A quiz to take after reading the instructor manual.
    • A postpaid envelope in which to return the completed quiz and W-9 reimbursement form.
  • You will then be required to assist in teaching a complete hunter education class with a certified instructor as a mentor. Game and Fish will help in making these arrangements if you do not have contacts in your community.
  • Once Game and Fish receives the paperwork from the mentoring instructor, you will receive a volunteer packet which includes an instructor ID number.

(Note: Game and Fish is working on plans for a hunter education instructor training academy. Once in place, this academy will replace the current system for becoming an instructor).
