Big Game Hunting

Bighorn Sheep Season Information

Moose, Elk, and Bighorn Sheep Hunting Regulations

2009 application deadline: March 18.

Because we have only a small population of bighorn sheep, most licenses are allocated to residents.

2009 Season dates:

  • Bighorn Sheep Bow Only Season Units B1, B3, B4: Oct. 2-25.
  • Bighorn Sheep Regular Season Units B1, B3, B4: Oct. 9-25.

  • Fishing, Hunting and Furbearer Certificate, $1
  • General Game and Habitat License, $13, or a Combination License, $32 (includes Small Game, General Game and Habitat, Furbearer, and Fishing licenses)
  • Bighorn Sheep License, $20/$10 for youth under age 16.

Nonresident licenses required:

  • Nonresident Fishing, Hunting and Furbearer Certificate, $2
  • General Game and Habitat License, $13
  • Nonresident Big Horn Sheep License, $500.
    • See details below: One bighorn lottery license may be issued annually to a nonresident drawn in the regular lottery. Application fee is $100, non-refundable.

Bighorn Sheep Auction License. One bighorn license is auctioned in March by the Minnesota-Wisconsin Chapter of the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep. North Dakota residents and nonresidents are eligible to purchase this license. Proceeds fund bighorn sheep research in North Dakota.

A Nonresident May Not Hunt G&F Lands Oct. 10-16

Nonresidents may not hunt on lands owned or leased by the North Dakota Game and Fish Department, including State Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) and Private Lands Open To Sportsmen (PLOTS), for the first week of pheasant season (October 10-16). This restriction applies to all types of hunting, not just pheasants.  This restriction does not apply to lands owned or managed by other state agencies that may be open to hunting, such as state school lands, federal lands that may be open to hunting, such as US Fish and Wildlife Service Waterfowl Production Areas (WPAs), or to private lands not enrolled in the G&F PLOTS program.
