The spring light goose conservation order was established in 1999 in response to exploding populations of snow and Ross's geese as over-foraging by the birds is damaging parts of their fragile Arctic breeding habitat. The conservation order allows the harvest of light geese outside of normal migratory bird treaty days to help control population growth. This year, the order runs from Feb. 23 through May 12.
