Brazilian Elodea or Brazilian Waterweed

Species Description Brazilian elodea is a large leafy plant with erect stalks 3-5 m tall with leaves in whorls of 4-8, with the edges of the leaves being minorly serrated. All plants found outside of the native range are male. Small, 3-petaled white flowers grow from stems at and above the water surface.
Preferred Habitat Slow-flowing water with warm to temperate water temperatures. It can survive in water temperatures of 3-35 degrees Celsius.
Reason for ANS Designation Has tolerance to low light conditions in highly turbid environments. A new population can begin by spreading plant fragments that can start from just two sections of the stem. It can tolerate high levels of phosphorus and can overwinter seeds and shoots until water temperatures reach 15 degrees Celsius. This species has been found in pet stores within North Dakota.
Place of Origin Native to South America, this species is commonly distributed by the aquarium trade.
Stopping the Spread When taking equipment out of a lake or stream, inspect it to make ensure is no aquatic vegetation. Leave any aquatic vegetation you find at the lake from which it was taken. Properly dispose of aquarium organisms by freezing them for 24 hours before discarding.
