Job Duration: Position is generally 40 hours per week and year-round. Applicants must be able to work weekends and on call duty during busy seasons. Overnight travel is also possible.

Summary of Work

Primary responsibilities involve assisting with planning, organizing, and carrying out disease surveillance and research projects including wildlife necropsies, retrieving carcasses from the field, field observations of study animals, maintaining the NDGF Wildlife Health Laboratory facility and equipment, intake and processing of samples and carcasses, interacting with the public, organizing and submitting samples to various labs for testing, data entry, organization, maintenance, and other duties as assigned.

Secondary responsibilities involve providing support to other wildlife and fisheries staff with statewide population monitoring and research projects, habitat work, data entry, organization, and maintenance as needed. Activities may include (but are not limited to) migratory bird banding, upland game roadside surveys, furbearer necropsies, and wildlife tagging or translocations.

Potential training after employment includes disease diagnostics and pathology, CPR/First Aid/AED certification, ATV safety training, and fur trapping and handling.

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires a minimum of a Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife biology or management or closely related natural resource science degree. Other 4-year science related degrees will be considered if the applicant has at least 2 years’ experience of wildlife field work. Graduating undergraduates with experience will be considered.

Must have or be able to obtain a Class D North Dakota driver’s license. Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds and be willing to travel extensively. Must possess well-developed oral and written communication skills, be highly responsible, be well organized, have attention to detail, and be self-motivated. Must have a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Outlook, Word and Excel).
