Species Description |
Bushy in appearance with 0.5-3.5 mm long leaves that appear whorled, curving downward, and have tiny spines. |
Preferred Habitat |
Slow-moving or stagnant water in depths up to 4m. Brittle naiad is more tolerant to turbidity and ecological disturbances. |
Reason for ANS Designation |
Quickly spreads via plant fragmentation and seeds. Can form dense clusters that lower species diversity and impede recreation. |
Place of Origin |
Native to Europe, western Asia, and northern Africa. |
Stopping the Spread |
When taking equipment out of a lake or stream, inspect it to ensure there is no aquatic vegetation. Leave any aquatic vegetation you find at the lake from which it was taken. |
