Prussian Carp

Fact Sheet
Scientific Name

(Carassius gibelio)

Classification and Permitting Level 1-Prohibted Aquatic Nuisance Species
Species Description Prussian Carp cannot be distinguished from wild type goldfish without genetic confirmation. The species is established in Alberta and Western Saskatchewan and will likely spread in waters of the Hudson Bay Drainage.
Preferred Habitat Can persist in a wide range of aquatic habitats in both flowing and lentic systems.
Reason for ANS Designation Can quickly establish in high densities in invaded waters. Prussian carp can reproduce sexually or through gynogenesis. Where established in Canada, Prussian carp suppression efforts have largely been unsuccessful, and the species has decimated invertebrate populations.
Place of Origin Prussian Carp are native to Europe and Asia. The species was first identified in Canada in 2006.
Stopping the Spread Prussian carp can spread in the Red River Basin through natural downstream dispersal. It is important that anglers follow bait regulations, to avoid the incidental spread of the species in North Dakota.
