It’s Not Always Hooks and Bullets

Letter of Recognition for Warden Greg Hastings

Today, 07-14-23, the Jamestown Police Department received a phone call from a frantic mother who reported their autistic son was brandishing a fillet knife.

The Jamestown patrol officers were all busy with calls, so two detectives responded, one patrol officer did make it as did game warden Greg Hastings.

The 19-year-old had the knife in his sleeve and brandished the knife when the officers approached him.

The 19-year-old eventually threw the knife in the river as the officers requested.

But then he jumped on the chain link fence as if he was going to jump in the river.

Warden Hastings secured him on the right side of the fence.

The subject is verbal but was non-verbal to the officers.

After some coaching, the man agreed to sit and wait on the curb for his parents and a mental health screener.

We learned from the mom that the man was upset about his lunch choice.

We also learned he liked pepperoni pizza.

Warden Hastings disappeared and returned with a pepperoni pizza and a coke.

When Warden Hastings exited his vehicle with the meal, the man pointed to him with excitement.

The whole situation was resolved on the curb.

As the officers were leaving, the man shouted, “Bye” and then his mother was heard saying something and then the man shouted again, “Thank you.”

The man went home with his father.

Please let Warden Greg Hastings know that we really needed his help today and he delivered.

Thank you,

Capt. LeRoy Gross
Jamestown Police Department
