The following teacher workshops are taught during the summer and spring semesters for one graduate credit. Look for educator workshops in your area. If your district is interested in hosting a workshop, contact Sherry Niesar here or at 701-527-3714.

Habitats of North Dakota Teacher Workshops

Course: Habitats of North Dakota Teacher Workshops

Topics

Five major North Dakota habitats (wetlands, prairie, riparian areas, badlands and woodlands), wildlife found in each habitat, importance of each habitat.

Cost

Free (Some districts may add an administrative fee. If taken for credit, there is also a $50/credit recording fee.)

Other

Each unit is accompanied by its own student guide and instructions for activities that relate to these areas. Teachers receive all the materials necessary to teach about the five habitats in their own classrooms. Workshops can also be requested by teachers if at least five teachers are present. The Department instructor will travel to sites to provide this service. Workshop duration is 15 hours for 1 graduate credit or shorter durations as requested by district.

A Visual Arts Approach to Teaching Life Science

Course: A Visual Arts Approach to Teaching Life Science

The workshop will demonstrate visual arts hands-on activities educators can use in their classrooms, discussion of classroom and curriculum integration, and identification of local resources.

Participants will complete several project based learning art projects to integrate into their life science curriculum.

Course: Life Science Resources for Elementary Educators

This workshop will provide an overview of North Dakota Game and Fish Department resources available to educators.

Free (some districts may add an administrative fee. If taken for credit, there is also a $50/credit recording fee.)

Other

Students will have the opportunity to participate in curriculum from The Whale, Wildlife of North Dakota Trunk, Elementary Aquatic Education Trunk and other resources. This in an integrated workshop for elementary, science and social studies teachers, and anyone else who would like to breathe life back into their curriculum. Materials are correlated to meet North Dakota curriculum standards.

Teachers will enjoy learning about the different types of wildlife found in the state. They will receive resource materials. The workshop will provide teachers with different lessons relevant to North Dakota by exploring life science investigation techniques. Links will be made between the description of wildlife and their habits and habitats using both classroom and field instruction. Materials are correlated to meet North Dakota Curriculum Standards.
